I just purchased my first bronzer of the year by Sugar. I love the super large compact that has an endless supply of bronzer for my face and body. I recently spoke with Aesthetician Angie Isbell, owner of Isbella Institute in Miami, FL about mistakes regarding our skincare routine. Here is one of the mistakes she mentioned:
“Not wearing any sun protection or adequate daily protection... An example would be accepting that the spf in your makeup is enough. This is a huge misconception. You will never get the full protection from makeup unless you layer it heavy. Make sure you use a full-spectrum spf of at least 15. An spf 30 is even better. It should protect you from both UVA and UVB rays.”

One of my favorite looks is a light shadow on the eye with a black or brown liner and finishing with mascara. This is great for day or if you are in a hurry to get out the door but wouldn't dream of leaving before doing something to the eyes. It is also a nice natural look. TIP: when choosing a base color for this look, be sure not to pick too light of a color. It should be around the color of your natural skin tone. Stay away from shimmery shadows all over the lid as it tends to age you. Priming the lid with a lid primer gets the true color of the shadow, makes the shadow stay for the day, and prevents a crepey look on the lid. Look for colors such as bone, wheat, bisque, butter, shell. These are common base color names.

More than anything, my clients discuss their mascara woes with me. They lean toward waterproof mascara that can be damaging for the lashes and is not removed easily. I have told several of my clients about Kiss Me mascara. The mascara actually forms tiny water resistant tubes around the lashes that last longer and doesn't even call for a makeup remover. One of my favorite products is the SPF 30 moisturizer from Aveenos Positively Radiant line. It allows me to use an SPF that doesn't make me look like an oil pit in a matter of minutes and gives my combination skin balanced hydration. I use this during the day and love it! I like using my Alpha Hydroxy Acids or retinol treatments in the evening as opposed to having it in my daytime moisturizer, so this product is perfect.

So many clients ask about the difference in the large selection of mineral powders on the market now. Here’s the scoop…
Just as you are selective about the liquid foundation you choose for your face for reasons such as ingredients, coverage, and quality, you should do the same with mineral foundation. They may say “Mineral”, but do they still use fillers such as talc and only have a little bit of the good stuff? Mineral powder should be healthy for the skin and provide excellent coverage. It should not contain fragrance, dyes, or talc in order to be ideal for sensitive, acne prone, and other skin types. Some powders also contain bismuth, which leaves the skin shiny and may have a white or chalky effect resulting in additional product use to control shine. My advice is to look at the ingredients and test a few lines to see what gives you the coverage you need along with what works well with your skin.

Why Prime? Priming the skin with a good primer before applying makeup creates a smooth canvas for your foundation. It can be used before your moisturizer just before applying foundation. Several makeup lines have a primer, some including an SPF. A few I like are Laura Mercier, Bess Cosmetics, and NARS. They all differ in texture but have the same functionality. If you are new to priming your face before applying your makeup, ask for samples of different primers to see which one works best. It makes a difference in the overall appearance and longevity of your makeup!
